It's commonplace for universities to speak of educating the whole person. Jesuit universities even have a Latin phrase for it鈥cura personalis. Loyola鈥檚 College of Nursing and Health consists of three degree-granting units鈥攖he School of Nursing, the Department of Counseling, and the Loyola Institute for Ministry. Each could be compartmentalized as attending to one aspect of the human person. Yet, individually and together, they promote the health of the whole person in mind, body, and spirit, and this holistic commitment has social justice implications.听

As with academic disciplines, restaurant writing could be compartmentalized as attending only to the materiality and pleasures of food, both of which are important. Yet, there is more to food and restaurants than that. Food figures centrally in various religious practices and is requisite for human health. Restaurants represent important cultural expressions and can help build community. They can also be important resources for, and commit offenses against, social justice.
The College of Nursing and Health welcomes Brett Anderson and looks forward to his perspectives on New Orleans restaurants. His talk will inform the reflection of the College of Nursing and Health on its own commitments to wholeness and justice 鈥 and allow listeners a fascinating perspective about New Orleans food and restaurant cultures and how they impact our society as a whole.听
