The New Orleans Vocal Arts Chorale will join the Loyola Chorale and a professional orchestra to perform “Ein deutsches Requiem,” culminating in what will be the largest performance of the year in the School of Music and Theatre Professions.

The concert, which will take place March 9 at 3 p.m. in Roussel Hall, is a part of the longstanding partnership between Loyola's choral programs and the NOVA Chorale, said J. Calloway Cieslak, events coordinator in the College of Music and Media at Loyola. The 70-minute performance will feature both choirs, joined by an orchestra comprised of some of the city’s finest musicians, he said.

“The combined forces of the NOVA Chorale and Loyola Chorale will give us a choir of more than 100, along with a full symphony orchestra,” said Meg Frazier, director of both Choral Studies at Loyola and the NOVA Chorale. “It’s going to be a magnificent performance, and I can’t wait to share it with our audience.”

The beloved and cherished choral masterwork, which Johannes Brahms composed between 1865 and 1868, was unique at the time for setting the Requiem Mass, typically in Latin, into vernacular German.

“This is not just a German translation of the Latin Mass but a complete departure from those texts,” Frazier said. “Brahms used Biblical texts, not liturgical texts. He intended it as a Requiem for all people – to be a source of comfort for everyone. The texts speak of the triumph of the eternal over the mundane.”

The NOVA Chorale is one of the top community choirs in New Orleans, dedicated to making the highest quality of choral music, Cieslak said. It is a regular collaborator with both the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and the Loyola Chorale, and its members are mostly active singers, teachers and musicians in the city, many of whom are Loyola alumni, he said.

Tickets are $35 for adults, $30 for seniors 65 and older, and $10 for Loyola students, faculty and staff with ID. Please visit for more information or to buy tickets.
