(New Orleans - March 4, 2020) 黑料社区 College of Law unveils two new Master鈥檚 degree programs in growing areas of significance and employment in Louisiana and the Gulf South. The new Master鈥檚 degree in Environmental Law and new Master鈥檚 degree in Health Law and Administration at Loyola New Orleans are designed to help people working in a wide range of positions benefit from understanding the legal framework that governs these highly regulated spaces.

鈥淥ur goal with these programs is to attract both recent college graduates seeking to enter the fields of healthcare and environmental compliance and experienced employees in these fields seeking to advance their careers,鈥 said Loyola Dean and Judge Adrian G. Duplantier Professor of Law Madeleine M. Landrieu, J.D. 鈥88, H鈥05.

鈥淟oyola鈥檚 College of Law will be the first in our state 鈥 and among few in the region 鈥 to offer these programs at the master鈥檚 level, and our programs will be set apart by the academic excellence, close faculty-student relationships, community, and opportunities to engage in skill-building and learning opportunities that distinguish our J.D. program.鈥

Both programs will lead graduates to increased and improved employment options in industry, Landrieu said.

Students in the Health Law program will start with foundational classes to help them understand the healthcare delivery system and the major laws that govern it, then build on these courses with electives like bioethics and healthcare privacy and security.

The combination of law, policy, client work and management training offered in the Health Law program will prepare students for management positions throughout hospitals and other health care facilities. 听For recent college graduates, this degree will provide an opportunity to explore a variety of careers in the massive and growing healthcare industry.

Students in the Environmental Law program will similarly begin their studies with foundational courses to help them understand the major environmental statutes and regulations, along with agencies鈥 听interpretations and enforcement of them, then take electives such as Oil & Gas and Climate Change law.听

Environmental compliance is a growing area of employment in a wide variety of industries, Landrieu said. The Master鈥檚 in Environmental Law degree will prepare college graduates to work in national, state, and local government and nonprofit jobs, as well as to ensure environmental compliance for small and large companies that need assistance tracking changes to the complicated environmental regulatory system and assessing and managing the environmental impact of their work.听

Students in both the Health and Environmental Law Master鈥檚 programs will supplement their substantive knowledge with skill-building courses in areas like negotiation, mediation, and legal research and have opportunities to do externships in the field. Students may complete each program in just one year 鈥 or take up to three years to complete their studies.

鈥淭he Health Law Program at Loyola New Orleans offers entry-level and mid-career professionals the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of health care and compliance law, and can be accomplished while continuing to work. In addition to broadening their technical knowledge, students will enhance their skills in problem-solving, analysis, and effective communication, essential skills for a 21st-century workforce,鈥 said Ann Koppel, director of the Health Law program.听

鈥淏uilding on the award-winning experiential programs offered at the College of Law, along with the rich tradition of high-quality education for working professionals, Loyola鈥檚 Health Law Program will educate a new generation of leaders in our healthcare community.鈥澨

鈥淢ore and more, employers want professionals with Master鈥檚-level education, skills, and experience,鈥 said Marianne Cufone, director of the Center for Environmental Law and innovative Environmental Policy Lab at Loyola. 鈥淥ur Master鈥檚 in Environmental Law program offers the opportunity to customize an individual experience based on interests and needs to increase employment opportunities.鈥
