The Maroon, ��������' 97-year-old student newspaper, won big in the Louisiana Press Association's Better Newspaper Competition for 2020. Student journalists took��home 23 awards, including 12 top prizes in their category.��The Maroon was named "Newspaper of the Year" in the Collegiate Division.��

"I could not be more proud of the brilliant journalists we have the privilege of teaching, and from whom we learn," said Loyola President Tania Tetlow. "Their work is remarkable."

"These awards validate the hard work our students are doing to produce excellent work in multiple formats," said Lisa Collins, interim director of the School of Communication and Design. "These journalists cover a range of issues and provide in-depth reporting with important context. They're not just writing articles, they're using technology to reach new audiences. Our students are reporting on breaking news, whether it's near campus or in downtown New Orleans. They're covering big stories that impact their fellow students, as well as south Louisiana. They're digging deep to expose societal problems and highlight communities that otherwise might go uncovered.

"There is no news town like New Orleans, where one day you could cover a major fire at a historic mansion in the Garden District, and the next be in the French Quarter photographing a modernized version of the Running of the Bulls," she added. "Our students don't do their reporting in a lab - they go out into the streets and cover New Orleans, with all its flaws and festivals, and everything in between."

"The work our students produce is second to none and it is changing the world," said Michael Giusti, chair of Loyola's award-winning journalism department and advisor to The Maroon.��"Because of the stories they create, Loyola, New Orleans, and the world are becoming a better place."
