In marking this loss, Fr. Justin Daffron, S.J., Vice President for Mission & Identity, sent the听following message to the campus community:

Dear Loyola Community,

I hope this message finds you well. It is with a heavy heart that I write to share that Kathy Lorio, former faculty member, passed away after a five year battle with cancer on July 19.

We are grateful for the legacy of Kathy's life which contributed so much to the Loyola Community for over 40 years. Her legendary career is reflected in the countless awards received including the 2000 Michelle P. Wynne Professionalism Award, the Louisiana Bar Foundation鈥檚 Professor of the Year Award in 2003, the 2005 Dux Acedemicas Award for Best Faculty Member of Loyola University, and the 2019 St. Ives Award for being an outstanding Loyola Law Graduate.

Dean Landrieu commented about Kathy: "At our law alumni luncheon last year, when Kathy received the St. Ives award, I asked all those in the room of 400+ law alumni to stand if they were taught by Kathy. It was quite a moment for me to watch her as almost everyone in the room stood. It was an incredible tribute to her life鈥檚 work. And, in the end, she taught us even more - how to face adversity head on, with her faith and good humor fully on view. We will miss her dearly."

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Kathryn Venturatos Lorio Distinguished Professorship at Loyola College of Law or the Cathedral Montessori School. The family invites you to share your thoughts, fond memories, and condolences online .听Kathy's complete obituary is available .

The generosity of your prayers for Kathy and the consolation of her loved ones are appreciated at this time.

Warmest Regards,

Fr. Justin Daffron, S.J.
