Loyola University M.B.A. graduate Kyle Huling co-founded the popular local Urban South Brewery in New Orleans in 2016. Urban South beers are sold in stores across southeastern Louisiana听and at the brewery鈥檚 large taproom on Tchoupitoulas Street in New Orleans. The local company currently employs five Loyola University graduates and recently opened a second brewery and taproom in Houston.

New Orleans native Kyle Huling enrolled in Loyola鈥檚 M.B.A program in 2006,听the spring semester after Hurricane Katrina. During this time, he worked full-time as a sales representative for Southern Eagle beer distributors. 鈥淢y days would be spent visiting grocery and convenience stores, and my nights were spent in Miller Hall,鈥 says Kyle. During the course of his studies, Kyle took a number of classes from Dr. Michael Pearson, the Chase/Francis C. Doyle Distinguished Professor of Marketing Emeritus, whose 鈥渇un-loving approach to marketing, promotion, and branding鈥 influences Urban South鈥檚 marketing and branding today.听 In 2006, one of Kyle鈥檚 course assignments鈥攁 presentation on employee retention programs鈥攍ed directly to him being promoted to national accounts manager at Southern Eagle.听

After graduating in 2010, Kyle continued in his role as national accounts manager at Southern Eagle for a year before being named brand manager for all of the import and craft beers in Southern Eagle鈥檚 product line. He then took the leading role in creating the company鈥檚 new department devoted to marketing local and regional craft beers.

After two years of careful business planning, Kyle and his business partner Jacob Landry realized their dream of opening their own local brewery in 2016. Urban South began with two beers鈥擟harming Wit and Holy Roller IPA鈥攕old in local grocery stores and in a large, rustic taproom on Tchoupitoulas Street. They then expanded sales to Baton Rouge and the Northshore and released a third beer鈥擯aradise Park. Urban South opened a second brewery and taproom in Houston in February.

Urban South鈥檚 local operation听employs听four additional Loyola University graduates. Murphy Fleanor 鈥11 is facilities manager, Abby Perkins 鈥17 is director of on-site sales and marketing, Max Boyce 鈥17 is a packaging operator, and Angel Robinson 鈥19 is the company鈥檚 bookkeeper and administrative assistant. The brewery is weathering the Coronavirus crisis through retail sales in regional grocery stores, online ordering, and curbside to-go service at its taproom.
